Athletic Scholarships

Facts for Parents of Student Athletes

Only 10% of all student-athletes get a full-ride scholarship. This means that 90% of all potential college athletes will only get a partial scholarship, at best. Therefore, almost every HS athlete MUST start the recruiting process with the idea that:

  • They are going to college to get an education
  • They are only going to receive a partial scholarship at best, and
  • They need to plan ahead to find ways to pay the balance of the college expenses

The three biggest mistakes families of student athletes make:

  1. An unrealistic opinion of the student?s athletic ability
  2. Waiting for the colleges to come to YOU
  3. Waiting until the senior year to begin the recruiting process

Two Conditions the student-athlete must meet:

  1. Must be good enough to be admitted to the college and play competitively
  2. Must be willing to market themselves

According to a recent survey of over 300 college coaches:

30% begin tracking athletes as a freshman

45% begin tracking athletes as sophomores

25% wait until the junior year

None start tracking athletes as seniors!

Without a marketing plan, college coaches outside a 75-mile area may not even know your student-athlete exists!

Student-athletes who are NOT Blue-chip athletes must be marketed to the schools.

It is very important that student-athletes (with behind-the-scenes help from the parents) do the recruiting and marketing themselves because the college coach:

1.    Wants to see a self-disciplined, independent, and even aggressive student-athlete who can take charge of their own life.

2.   Must believe that the student-athlete really wants to attend THEIR college, and

3.  Will usually toss out letters and resumes from families who appear to have used (hired) a professional recruiting (marketing) company to market their student-athlete.? These professional packages are mass produced and usually include many other athletes? resumes, who are also attempting rmissionsReadWriteExecuteU to receive offers.? This lack of personalization gives the coach the perception that the student-athlete is just trying to get the best deal and not truly interested in THEIR College.

American College Funding provides the student-athlete with a marketing package that is specifically designed to help with this process.

The Student-Athlete Tuition Rx Marketing Program provides you with a step-by-step procedural manual and materials to allow the family to self-promote and market the student-athlete to colleges.

The package includes:

  1. Student-Athlete Rx self-recruiting manual
  2. One-Hour Instructional CD/DVD
  3. Recruiting Template CD (with sample letters, resume, tracking system and progress report update)

The focus is on a proprietary six-step process to success:

  1. Picking the right colleges to contact
  2. Writing a great cover letter
  3. Creating a one-page resume
  4. Putting together an athletic recruiting video
  5. Tracking your communications with colleges
  6. Sending out one-page updates
